However, after being mauled by another bear Glass becomes close to death but miraculously recovers because of remedies given to him by his Native Indian Wife. Hugh Glass is a frontiersman and a trapper in the 1820s. He is married to a Native American woman who saves his life using native remedies after a bear mauls him. He then continues to rely on the medicine given to him by his Native American wife until he goes on another expedition with two trappers, John Fitzgerald, and Andrew Henry. After they are attacked by Arikara warriors while crossing the river Glass leads them to safety but while doing this he is slashed by an Arikara arrow while the other men are killed. The Arikara leader, called Buffalo Hump, then lures him into a trap and wounds him with an arrowhead in his back. He then chops his leg to cripple Glass and lets him escape from the bear pit he was trapped in. After walking distances through the snow barefooted Glass reaches a cabin near the post of Fort Kiowa where he is rescued by two hunters named Bridger and Marais. But after they leave for Saint Louis to get help for Glass, he is left alone in a bed made of animal skins that become infested with maggots. Despite this disease, Glass survives and recovers from his wounds due to the medicine given to him by his Native American wife. The movie was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu who is well known for his efforts in the movie Babel. It was produced by Arnon Milchan, Michael Benaroya, Patrick Wachsberger, and James D. Skotchdopole. The screenplay was written by Mark L. Smith, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Iñárritu's son, Mateo Iñárritu. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass; Tom Hardy as John Fitzgerald; Domhnall Gleeson as Andrew Henry; Will Poulter as Jim Bridger; and Paul Anderson as Alexander McNair. Iñárritu utilised an ensemble of highly skilled cinematographers, including Emmanuel Lubezki, Robert Richardson, and Tom Stern. It was edited by Pietro Scalia, with music by Jonny Greenwood. The film's score was composed by Hans Zimmer. The title of the film is taken from the novel "The Revenant", written by Michael Punke. The screenplay has been submitted to be considered for inclusion on the Library of Congress' National Film Registry due to its cultural significance.
